A Note About Re-Watching TV Shows

I have a lot of shows I like on DVD. I also have a lot of shows I used to like on DVD. I just got BOY MEETS WORLD season 1 on DVD now. One of the most important things I've realized is that like a song you listen to over and over again, a show you watched growing up means different things to you as you age.

FOR EXAMPLE: Season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Season 6 was very dark. Although the first few episodes brought great comedy: "Flooded," (Buffy beat up a demon in a bank and asked for a loan), "All the Way" (Halloween, Xander and Anya's engagement), "Life Serial" (Buffy trying to find a job) "Tabula Rasa" (group memory loss) and the critically acclaimed and groundbreaking musical episode, "Once More, With Feeling," it got pretty dark.

At the time, I wasn't a fan of the dark parts. I was in high school, and i naturally related to the earlier seasons (read- the seasons before Buffy died and switched to UPN). As I've been re-watching season 6, I've found love for many other episodes for one simple reason: I get it! Season 6 wasn't about darkness. Well, to some extent it was about darkness- (I mean, Willow did almost destroy the world and all).

But with my life establishing in my twenties, I can appreciate season 6 and recognize the simplicity of it. Season 6 was about growing up, trying to fix your life, find your life, and be an adult. Giles left, the kids had to grow up. Everyone made some bad decisions. Tara was killed. Life is hard, and season 6 was all about that. Sometimes people make mistakes (Buffy's whole relationship with Spike). Sometimes you have ato take a job you hate (at the Doublemeat Palace), and soemtimes you're not as ready to be as grown up as you think (Xander leaving Anya at the altar). But in the end, you have your friend that remembers you being upset about your broken crayon, and you know it will all be okay in the end.

A Note About SMG on TV

I'm very excited to read about Sarah Michelle Gellar's new TV show pilot getting ordered by CBS! Read more about "Ringer" here.

A Note About Being Erica

I'm so excited season 3 of Being Erica is just days away (for us here in America at least). This Canadian delight has been on my mind a lot few days, and its amazing music. The season finale included top-notch songs from former Canadian Idol contestant Sebastain Pignott (his performance of the "Alien" song in the coffeehouse was heart-wrenching. I dare you to watch the video and not tear up). I'm so excited to see him return as Kai this season!

Other sons from that finale were Robyn Dell'Unto's "Ghost," and "Open Your Eyes" by Snow Patrol. Basically the whole episode soundtrack was tearjerker, which means they are telling good and emotionally fulfilling stories.

I'm not so sure I'm on board for the American re-boot of the show that ABC is developing, but for now, the real thing will be here.

A Note About Winter Movies

I hate snow. I cannot stand winter. So here are 5 movies that I plan to watch with the upcoming (and impending) snow days to follow:

5. The Tourist
Because:I received an advance copy. I feel bad not watching it.

4. Jane Austen Book Club
Because:I also got this recently. I love Jane Austen AND book clubs. Enough said.

3. Definitely, Maybe
Because: Ryan Reynolds is in it. God Bless Canada.

2. Anything with John Cusack
Because: I got "Grosse Point Blank" and "High Fidelity" on DVD. And because there's nothing more I love than a guy with boombox over his head, I might also watch "Say Anything."

1. Ten Things I Hate About You
Because: I just got the 10th anniversary DVD. And it's 90's teen Shakespeare. Prepare to be "Whelmed." They're all getting whelmed in Europe, according to Gabrielle Union's character.

A Note About Boy Band Reunions!

I was a loyal watcher of the early reality show Making the Band, back in 2000. For you youngins, it was like "American Idol" and "Real World" combined into one show.

Here's how it worked: Guys auditioned to be in a band. A bunch made the cut, and lived and sang together. They got voted off by some "music professionals," (thankfully a show where America doesn't choose) and eventually got 5 guys. One guy had a whiny girlfriend (Shelli). Then one guy quit because it was too much pressure (Ikaika), and got replaced by another guy (Dan). They put out a single and an album. Then the reject guys formed their own band (LMNT). Then they faded into onscurity. One became a carpenter (Jakob). One re-launched his singing career and reality start status in 2006 (Ashley). I went to a mall to meet him.

Then in 2011, they decided to have a reunion??? Check out the story from EW.

A Note About The Future of Seattle Grace

Once again, I have to say I love this season of Greys Anatomy. It clicks. It's like looking back in time to earlier seasons. From Meredith's sudden need to get pregnant to Cristina's hard road away (and finally back) from being a doctor, it works.

From the moment last night's episode started, I knew Callie was going to be pregnant. With Mark's baby. I announced it at 9:01 P.M. At the end of the episode, she announced it her ex-girlfriend Arizona.

So now I predict this: Alex Karev will be chief resident.
It's been so Meredith/Cristina/April-type focused, I see Alex coming up on top!

A Note About Bingo: The Good Wife is in the Game

I couldn't resist it, I had to make a bingo board for The Good Wife. At the time I went to press, I was missing one remaining B5 spot. I will have a piece by next week's episode!

A Note About Why Cougartown Had 15 Solid Minutes

For most sitcoms, there's a zing, a joke, a pause, a plot, a wardrobe change, final zing, and a resolution. But for Wednesday's Cougartown' episode "No Reason to Cry" had me laughing and smirking solidly. The greatness of this show comes from the writing that sounds like real dialogue, the character relationships, and the playing up of all-too-often mundane situations (like Jules accidentally killing a bird). Here below is a list of the reasons why this episode was great:

15. Andy giving people the wrong names of distant acquaintances, only to have them call said acquaintances by the wrong name.

14. The return of Bobby's boat. (How did they get it out of the ocean in such good condition?

13. Lori talking about her screenplay about slutty insects titled "Bug Hookers."

12. Travis likening the cul-de-sac crew to the Children of the Corn.

11. Bobby's one-minute summary of current events.

10. Jules picking out the "Jules dove," which has "finger guns with tiny claws."

9. The commercial for cougartownandysdreams.com. Actual site: http://abc.go.com/shows/cougar-town/andys-dreams/ThemeGallery/671709

8. Lori's complicated coffee orders, including a "Taye Diggs," which is tall, black, and extra sweet.

7. Bobby's shameless promotion of Diet Dr. Pepper, one of the show's sponsors.

6. The reinforced idea that dove brains are only the size of a tic tac.

5. Jules agreeing to talk/yell at Grayson only for the amount of time it took him to cross the street.

4. Pirate references.

3. Grayson's sly Prince reference, "This is what it sounds like when doves cry." Furthermore, Grayson's Prince references throughout the season.

2. Nonfat teeny tiny, extra shot of yum.

1. Andy writing fake apology notes from his wife as a "special" thing between them.

A Note About Vampire Shows: Season 1 Finales

I FINALLY finished watching the first seasons of TRUE BLOOD and The Vampire Diaries!

The Vampire Diaries reaction:

  • Katherine posing as Elena was genius.
  • Jeremy trying to become a vampire was sad.
  • I was actually sad when Anna died.
  • I wasn't surprised at all that John is Elena's dad.
  • Why does Elena keep talking to Damon when she knows he likes her?

True Blood reaction:

  • After all Bill has survived, Sookie really thought Bill was dead? Have a little faith.
  • Sam is still in love with Sookie.
  • Of course Jason wasn't the killer.
  • Tara and Sookie are finally good. Too bad Tara joined some kind of creepy cult.
  • Jason found Jesus? That's just hysterical.
  • But Renee as the waitress killer? I suspected earlier in the episode, but what I was really shocked about was the fake accent. Fake accents always devastate my view of a character.

A Note About Desperate House-Why

It's no secret Desperate Housewives has been on a downward spiral this season. Gaby's kid was switched at birth, Paul Young gets out of jail, Bree dates David Silver, Susan's husband moves to Alaska and they go broke... (not in that order).

After the crushing mob in the December finale, it was clear things were going from bad to worse. Sunday's episode was no exception.

Best moments:
Bree's ex husband calling her new beau "Stanley Kowalski." And her beau having no idea he is being referenced to a "Streetcar Named Desire" episode.

Lynette giving her husband burning coffee after finding out he slept with her best friend 20 years ago.

Worst Moments:
Susan needing a kidney transplant.

Renee confessing her transgression with Lynette's husband.

Gaby taking her daughter to a doll shop.

Gaby then buying a doll that looks like her biological daughter.

Every scene with the corny detectives.

Susan collapsing on the floor.

Susan's annoying kid talking about ice cream.
