Grey's Anatomy Season 12: Can We Mend Japril's Broken Hearts?

I loved this week's Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) centered episode of Grey's Anatomy. I have really been digging some of these more intimate episodes that focus on a few characters and their one through-line story, and this was a doozy. Jackson (Avery) and Meredith are supposed to to Montana to operate on a little girl at the Avery Hospital there. Of course, Jackson's overbearing mother (the lovely Debbie Allen) changes plans at the last moment and sends her favorite ex-daughter-in-law (April) instead. It's weird enough that the two got divorced while April was pregnant, and they live together, but now they're taking work trips to a Podunk town? That's the definition of awkward turtle.

As I had hoped, Jackson took this opportunity for more than just helping a cute, sick girl get her voice back. (He did get her get her voice back from a very threatening tumor in her throat, but I knew they would pull that off.) Jackson came to this town to spy on his deadbeat dad, the infamous Dr. Robert Avery. As the legend goes, the Sr. Dr. Avery met the voracious Catherine, and she rose to the challenge of running a large Avery (family medical) Foundation, and he peaced out from his family to find a simpler life. Robert quit medicine, moved to Montana and opened a diner, which really looked more like a bar that served food. Jackson gets drunk at the bar, he studies his books, and he cannot even speak to this man. What does someone say to the parent that abandoned them as a baby?

Much to Robert's credit, he is warm and friendly to Jackson. He hugs him and asks about his life and Mommie Dearest when Jackson gets the guts to confess who he really is. What is Jackson really after? Is it closure, is it proving that he turned out to be a pretty great guy despite not having a real role model? Is it to show that his recent stepfather Richard is more of a father than this sperm donor ever was? I don't think Jackson particularly knows why, which is why he can't tell April what happened at first. April has a great tight-knit family. Sure they're a little judgey in a Christian way, but the Kebner clan have been there for April when she needed them  and they care about her happiness. The couple themselves have really been through some deep stuff.

  • Seattle Grace and Marcy West merged. Their friend was shot and died like the first week,
  • April lost her virginity to Jackson during medical boards and lost her cool in the verbal exam
  • April pulled a Runaway Bride at her wedding to the paramedic to run away with Jackson
  • Their first baby was  delivered pre-term with a life-threatening condition, living an hour
  • She coped with the baby by leaving Seattle to work in the army medical corps
  • Their bitter divorce and goodbye sex that led to baby Harriet
They couple are now partners in raising little Harriet (and possible the longest running ship still on Grey's) and their parenthood is really motivated by their solid friendship. In conclusion, there should be nothing they can't say to each other.

This became such an emotionally charged episode, and at the root of it all, it brought Japril closer together than they have been in a long time. They were originally such great friends before their romance and it's my greatest hope would be to see these two crazy kids back together. Jackson got so drunk, he almost blew figuring out how to do the surgery safely. He brought up their dead baby in front of April (who did not take it well considering she took off to be a an army medic after that situation ended). They fought about how to safely complete the surgery, but when the right idea clicked, there as an electrical pulse between the couple. April also convinced Jackson to go back and see his father. He told Robert he did not want a relationship, he did not want his daughter to meet him, and to have a nice life. It's not the warm and fuzzy parental relationships we hope the Grey's kids will have, but in this case, it was best for Jackson. He could finally get closure on this part of his life. Jackson and April celebrated the surgery by face-timing their baby goodnight and having a hotel sleep-over. Is this meant to be closure on Jackson and April? I certainly hope not because even the actors are pulling for this long-suffering couple.

In related news, I am completely uninterested in Meredith and Riggs (although I love Meredith dearly).  This "will they or won't they" often ends in won't and Meredith has a lot of damn baggage, so Riggs should stop this 2+ year pursuit. Now it's just annoying.

Holiday Road.... Top RT Audio for the Holiday Season

I have been spending so much time in the car lately. It's easy for me to get tired of the radio. I've tried everything (but cassette tapes) to keep me sane behind the wheel. I've put together my top three songs and top 5 podcasts that have been helping me deal with holiday traffic.

SONGS:
It's that cold time of year again. My current local temperature is about 22 degrees, which makes car travel less fun toff the bat. I need music to get me in the car. A good holiday song will make you forget you're in traffic. A great song will turn your boring commute into a party-like atmosphere , which is great when there is a bottleneck to view an accident on the other side of the highway.

3. Florida Georgia Line: Cruise
"I've got my windows down, and my radio up..."
This 2013 radio staple get me to roll down my windows and relax (if it is above 40 degrees out). I caught FGL in the summer of 2013 touring with Luke Bryan as this song was burning up the country, pop and hip hop charts. It was a near religious experience on a sweltering Labor Day weekend in Pennsylvania  as Tyler Hubbard (Georgia of the aforementioned Line) yelled out "Yeah Girl" to my "Let's cruise" sign. Something about the song on the radio takes me back to that concert and the memories of that weekend. Cruise and other songs about sipping beers, falling in love, dancing in fields, and other summer fun can be found on Here's to the Good Times.

2. Maren Morris: 80's Mercedes
"...Feel like a hard to get starlet when I'm driving...."
I love listening to this song in the car. It reminds me of summertime, no traffic, and it's very catchy. Maren Morris has blown up the country scene this year, winning Bes New Artist at November's CMA Awards. Her mix of pop, soul and country make her Summer 2016 album Hero on repeat.

1. Tim McGraw: Shotgun Rider
"...No I don't ever want to know... no  other shotgun rider beside you, singing along to the radio."
(c) PipPepPop

PODCASTS:
Everyone has a podcast these days. All you need are some good microphones, the gift of gab, and an iTunes account. All you need to listen are ears. I have been devouring the following podcasts in no particular order :

5. Shondaland Revealed
TGIT fans can rejoice! ABC super EP Betsy Beers is back bi-weekly this season and  interviewing her beloved Shonda Thursdays actors. Stars of Grey's Anatomy, Scandal (premieres next month), The Catch (premieres March) and How to Get Away with Murder come to chat about their shows. I also believe this started as a Scandal podcast and expanded out to the other shows. In the news, I have to know who is under the sheet (dead) on HTGAM! I know Betsy will have that interview (and the actor's fashion report) soon. The podcast is on iTunes alternate Fridays with first looks on EW.com Thursday nights.

4.  Buffering the Vampire Slayer
Real-life couple Kristin Russo and Jenny Owens Young have just completed a watch of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's season 1. January is the perfect time to jump in on the emotionally crippling season 2. There's some important conversations to be had here about the dialog (mostly from Xander) and situations from the 90's (just yell "The Patriarchy") that are no longer politically correct.  There's also much amazing fashion to discuss (t-shirts under camis and dresses, velour everything, anyone?) Buffy fans new and old will enjoy this podcast. I loved the interview with Armin Shimerman (aka Principal Synder) and hope to hear more behind the scenes tidbits as Buffy turns 20 this spring. Each episode ends with an original composition the ladies have written  about the theme of the episode. I know the upcoming School Hard already lends itself to an easy chorus. The podcast drops on iTunes Wednesday nights/Thursday mornings. Visit the podcast website here.

3. Bitch Sesh- A Real Housewives Breakdown Show
Hosts Casey Warner and Danielle Schneider are celebrating year on the airwaves with special guest, Bravo's King Andy Cohen. Both women come from comedy writing and acting backgrounds, and they launched the Hulu original mockumentaries "The Real Housewives of Orlando" and "The Real Housewives of Las Vegas." This podcast is all bravo, all the time. The episodes recap all of the Real Housewives franchises (mainstays Orange County, Beverly Hills, NY, NJ, Atlanta, and the less successful Dallas, DC, and Potomac forays.) The podcast is usually found Wednesdays! Catch the crew on iTunes here.

2. Gossip Guys
Andy Greene and Aaron Davitian have steered the ship USS Gossip Girl for nearly three seasons, and only spoiled one major plotline. If you listed to the "Never Have I Ever" episode, you and Andy will find out who is Gossip Girl.  The L.A.-based pair always have something to say as two guys watching a post-Internet boom teen drama. They push through the party and scheme of the  week, coining phrases such as 'manipiate': a manipulation, usually involving Nate. I've found myself yelling "It's not enough," when they honor Blair's stepdad Cyrus, or "It's a small island," whenever a character unfathomably appears in the next scene after going from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Join the guys as we head into the (personal opinion) turbulent and off-putting season 4. Let's hope next season will end with a "Summer of Serena" movie binge of Blake Lively classics. Episodes usually release Mondays. Spot the guys on iTunes here.

1. The Shipping Room
If you've ever rooted for a TV couple, this podcast is for you! From The Wonder Years to Chicago P.D. and everything in between (usually 902010 or One Tree Hill), Christine and Tamar fearlessly plunge into important TV relationship topics. Past episodes have been about affairs, pregnancies and engagements. The ladies share weekly listener "Tip 10 Ships" lists and talk with top T.V. writers. Episodes drop on Fridays. Check them out on iTunes.

Poor Meredith Grey

As the leading lady of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith Grey has been through a lot of terrible situations. When we first met the grumpy, friendless, brilliant, makes-bad-decisions while drunk surgeon in 2005, she was simply trying to get her Alzheimer's afflicted mother to sign over power of attorney. Compared to that piece of cake, Meredith has faced a significantly greater  hardship. On Thursday's episode, she got beat up by a patient that was in a fugue state from sedation. Mer had broken bones, a broken jaw, and hearing loss, among other problems (Season 12, Episode 9). She was watched over and cared for by her dear friend Alex, and at this point I think he should just be her new husband. They both have some pretty serious relationship issues and understand each other on a deep level. (Plus, in a weird alternate flash forward, Meredith was engaged to Alex, so I could see it working).  Here are Meredith's 35 greatest hits and struggles that led her to this moment:

  1. Meredith gets caught caught having car sex with her boss's boss. (Season 1, Episode 5)
  2. Meredith finds out her boyfriend's ex-wife is back in the picture. (Season 1, Episode 9)
  3. Everyone at the hospital find out Meredith's mom has Alzheimer's. (Season 2, Episode 3)
  4. Her one-night stand ends up in the E.R. with a sex injury. (Season 2, Episode 10)
  5. Meredith has to hold a live bomb in a patient during surgery. (Season 2, Episode 16)
  6. She has sex with her roommate George and feel terrible about it. (Season 2, Episode 19)
  7. McDog is put down and Meredith must choose McDreamy or McVet. (Season 2, Episode 27)
  8. Meredith's half-sister is admitted to the hospital. Family drama! (Season 3, Episode 10)
  9. Meredith drowns and almost dies while rescuing ferry boat accident victims and her mom dies (Season 3, Episode 17)
  10. Meredith gets a group of residents and meets another of her half-sisters, Lexie. (Season 4, Episode 1)
  11. Mer and McDreamy's clinical trial succeeds, they get back together, and she makes breakthroughs in therapy. (Season 4, Episode 17)
  12. Mer and McDreamy cancel their dream wedding to let Alex and dying Izzie (not really) get married. They sign a post-it note and call themselves wedded. (Season 5, Episode 22)
  13. George gets hit by a car and dies. (Season 6, Episode 1)
  14. Meredith's  no-good father comes into the hospital needing a liver transplant and she is the only match. (Season 6, Episode 4)
  15. Meredith watches Derek get shot at the hospital and loses her baby. (Season 6, Episode 24)
  16. Meredith discovers fertility problems, gets on Derek's Alzheimer's clinical trial, and her dad comes into the hospital again with a girlfriend younger than her. (Season 7, Episodes 14-16)
  17. McDreamy and Mer adopt African orphan, Zola. (Season 8)
  18. Alex and Meredith are in an ambulance saving a newborn baby when they get into an accident. (Season 8, Episodes 9-10)
  19. Mer, McDreamy and most of the gang are in a plane crash. (Season 8, Episode 24)
  20. Everyone is messed up (Derek, Arizona, Meredith, Cristina) or dead (Lexie, Mark) from the plane crash, but they get offered a lot of money from the hospital and end up becoming the new board of directors. (Season 9, Episode 3, 11, 15, 16)
  21. Meredith finds out she is pregnant. (Season 9, Episode 9)
  22. Meredith has to get back on a plane. (Season 9, Episode 17)
  23. Meredith gives birth to Bailey in the middle of a blackout. (Season 9 Episode 24)
  24. A 3-D printer becomes available for Meredith's clinical trial to make fake organs. (Season 10, Episode 8)
  25. McDreamy takes a job in D.C. advising the president, and Meredith is not consulted. (Season 10, Episode 18)
  26. Meredith says goodbye to bestie Cristina and discovers another half-sister (Maggie) that is working at the hospital. (Season 10, Episode 24)
  27. McDreamy agrees to quit his new brain mapping job and come home to Meredith, and she convinces him they can make it work. (Season 11, Episode 1)
  28. Meredith has flashbacks to her mother giving birth to Maggie and attempting to kill herself during the same time, which makes it pretty difficult for Meredith to let this go. (Season 11)
  29. Meredith goes to visit McDreamy in D.C.  and chickens out. (Season 11, Episode 12)
  30. Meredith calls McDreamy after an earthquake and some woman answers his phone. (Season 11, Episode 15).
  31. Meredith and McDreamy patch things up. (Season 11, Episode 17)
  32. Meredith freaks out after a plane crash in town and she can't confirm McDreamy made it back to D.C. for his final meeting to resign his job. (Season 11, Episode 20)
  33. McDreamy dies...... and Meredith is relatively emotionally solid. (Season 11, Episode 21)
  34. Meredith falls apart, disappearing for a year, having a baby, and avoiding contact with all of her friends. Alex finally lures her home and gives her back the deed to her house, which he bought back when she moved in with McDreamy. (Season 11, Episodes 22, 23)
  35. Meredith is named Chief of General Surgery. (Season 12, Episode 2)

Musical TV Episodes- From Buffy to Greys

So a week ago, I watched the Grey's Anatomy- The Musical Event. It was good. I liked it. Although as the Ew.com review clearly pointed out an alarming details -and I always notice those alarming details in shows- but why was everyone singing and having happy sex while Callie lay there possibly dying? That major fact aside, and the way too liberal amount of singing they gave Dr. Hunt, it was a good episode. There were stronger songs- Running on Sunshine, How to Save A Life, Chasing Cars, and The Story (watch the live version- its so much better than the recorded one)- to name a few.

FLASHBACK MOMENT- I looked up the clip where "Chasing Cars" was first used, back in the 2006 season 2 finale- when Karev had a heart and pulled Izzy off her dead fiance's bed. Check it out, George is alive, Meredith is still dark and twisty,Callie has a horrible mess of hair, and even the slutty redhead nurse is in the background. Meanwhile, McDreamy is acting all McShady because he just met Meredith in the exam room and he's supposed to be working things out with the wife. Christina is going to reconcile with Dr. Burke (and how weird was it for her to constantly be touting his procedure in this episode, I mean the dude left her at the altar). To further add to this nostalgia, check out Chris O'Donnell as McVet. Ah, memories.

First of all, thank you to Greys for letting Eli (AKA Franco from Rescue Me) dance Dr. Bailey all around the nurses' station and Scott Foley sing. I'm a big fan of the Foley and I'm 99% sure he is going to make a complete career comeback!

Second, I love Sara Ramirez's voice more than life itself. This is why the musical worked. she led the cast in her ephemeral half-there/floating ghost form, singing everyone through their pain.

Third, wonderfully sexy singing came from Karev and McSteamy! They deserved to sing more. And Mr. McDreamy was mysteriously silent- and he did sing the tiniest bit in the movie Enchanted. On second thought, I think he was the only one that didn't sing.... but he had beautiful jazz hands during "That's How You Know."

Fourth, what is going on with the Lexie/Mark/Avery thing? she wants Mark, she cares for him through the birth of his kid, and when Avery gives her an ultimatum (good for you, Avery- don't be a shelf-boy, there is a fine line between waiting outside her door and waiting for someone who will never give their heart to you!), she goes home with him.

So to return to musical episodes, it all started with Cop Rock, but that was too high concept at the time. Without VH1- nobody would have known about CR. But if CR is the founding father, the Teddy Roosevelt if you will, of musical tv show episodes, then Buffy the Vampire Slayer is certainly the hell-raising Alice Roosevelt daughter of them. And that is why I will be posting about the groundbreaking season 6 episode, "Once More, With Feeling"(view the original trailer in the link) tomorrow. Check it out!

A Note About The Future of Seattle Grace

Once again, I have to say I love this season of Greys Anatomy. It clicks. It's like looking back in time to earlier seasons. From Meredith's sudden need to get pregnant to Cristina's hard road away (and finally back) from being a doctor, it works.

From the moment last night's episode started, I knew Callie was going to be pregnant. With Mark's baby. I announced it at 9:01 P.M. At the end of the episode, she announced it her ex-girlfriend Arizona.

So now I predict this: Alex Karev will be chief resident.
It's been so Meredith/Cristina/April-type focused, I see Alex coming up on top!

A Love Note About Grey's

Greys is back! I am really loving this season so far! And EW is too!

ADDENDUM 11.08.10
On the other hand, 90210 tried to pull a Meredith Grey-style thoughtful about life voiceover. Not cool. Meredith would denounce you. Imitation is not always the sincerest form of flattery. Don't try to pull a Meredith!

A Note About the Guts of Meredith Grey

Photo note: I created this list for my friend to use at Halloween a few years ago when she dressed up as Meredith Grey. Many of these things still apply today. In homage to our favorite miserable doctor, check out her to-do list above.

A Note About Fall Music I Can't Stop Spinning: Animalism in Music

I've noticed an increasing about of songs coming out that really relate to animals. Not the fuzzy love and uicorn types, but the bear your teeth, run throuigh the wind, howl at the night version. Here are my top 4 animal themed songs.

4. Animal Song- Savage Garden
It's an oldie (from 1999's Affirmation), but a very spiritual song about the free spirit. Running through the jungle with the wind in your hair and the sun at your feet never sounded so good. The rythmic drumming in the background takes on a tribal nature AND sounds like footsteps.

3. Feral Love- Wakey! Wakey!
From their recent album (Everything I Wish I Said Since the Last Time I Saw You- great title!), is more than a standard "lamenting about a former love track". It's got a dark and twisted "my love was taken away from me in a hunting incident" feel. Wakey! Wakey! frontman Mike Grubbs was also a guest star on One Tree Hill last season playing the Tric bartender. They played some really great tracks from the band during the later part of last season.

2. Portions for Foxes- Rilo Kiley
I didn't discover this fabulous song (from the 2004 More Adventurous release) until about four years after it was played in the Grey's Anatomy pilot (When Meredith drives through Seattle to the hospital), but I fell in love with it. Nothing like a bad romance (yes I went there) to leave you as as portions for the foxes.

1. Animal- Neon Trees
I went through a recent weekend of hearing this song over and over, but having no idea about the artist, song title, or most of the exact lyrics were. Try doing a web search for "Take a Bite of My Heart Tonight" and see what I'm talking about. After a lot of searching I finally found this track (from the 2010 Habits release), which is getting some great radio play. I'm pretty sure their song was on some CW show recently.

A Note About Corny Guest Starrings

Despite everything bad people can say about Grey's Anatomy, I've always been loyal.

I've stood by through everything.

But this week's commercial ended with the dramatic, "special guest star Demi Lovato."

Really?
